Tokunbo City Auto Sales was founded by Tai Yekinni in 2007. As a young graduate Tai watched  hard working Nigerians unable to afford an automobile. As a new migrant, he observed how Americans with the most menial jobs are able to afford decent cars and dreamed of the day he would be able to afford Nigerians the same opportunities afford every hard working Americans. Tai worked as a driving instructor in Chicago where he learned how to use computer based diagnostic tools to enhance his knowledge of automobile engines. Although Tai was learning the most advanced techniques in auto repair, he never forgot the lessons he learned from his father all those years ago. His father used to repair and restore cars for friends and neighbors; asking for little compensation in return. Tai never forgot the gratitude of those his father helped. He never forgot the warm feeling he felt every time his father would deliver a restored vehicle to someone who couldn't afford a new one. Tai was determined to honor his father by opening a business that would truly offer value to Nigerians and make it as easy for hard working Nigerians to afford an automobile as it is for an average American or European. He promised himself to always provide value and outstanding service, regardless of how large his business grew.

Tai opened Tokunbo city Auto Sales in 2007 on a small lot in Detroit. from where he shipped the occasional vehicle to Nigeria. Word of great deals and outstanding service quickly spread throughout the African community in Detroit. Tokunbo city Auto soon ran out of room for its growing inventory and had to find a larger facility that would allow it to continue growing.
